Seismic Retrofit of Concrete with Carbon Fiber

According to seismologists from the geological survey, many countries have more than 2500 earthquakes a year, with the highest of more than 100 earthquakes of magnitude 5 or greater each year.

Seismic transformation is particularly important in structural reinforcement. Seismic retrofitting is one of the specific backgrounds that require professional concrete contractors to strengthen concrete structures.

Seismic transformation refers to the transformation of the structure to make it seismic. The goal is to protect the public and prevent damage to building components and content by improving the survivability of the structure. Strengthening of structures is also an issue of compliance with recent code requirements specifically for the threat of seismicity.

There are many strategies and techniques that can be used for seismic repair and reinforcement of concrete structures. There are two common methods.

First, new structural elements have been added. This is usually achieved by adding cross supports and new structural walls and frames. External concrete columns made of reinforced concrete can also be added to the structure.

The second approach is to strengthen the existing structural elements. This usually involves adding reinforcement to existing concrete. This may take the form of steel plate bonding, adding steel plates to the exterior of existing concrete sections. It can also be in the form of continuous steel plates or sheaths, in which the steel plates are continuously wrapped around the concrete structural elements. It may also take the form of modern advanced composite materials, such as glass fiber reinforced or carbon fiber reinforced.
